05/27/21 Fishing Report

Brace yourselves, Summer is coming….

After an INCREDIBLY productive Winter and a great Spring season, water temps are warming up and fish are moving into their Summer behavior patterns. What does that mean? Fantastic question, I’m glad you asked.

For starters, let’s just say a topwater is an absolute must have right now. Some folks have their favorite color, size, etc… but to be real with you, right now they’re eating everything. I’ve thrown, bone, pink/silver, blue/silver, orange/black, blue/chartreuse… they’ve all been working well. Some days are better than others of course, but that early morning topwater bite has been insane in the membrane. Summer also means that the water clarity is turning more and more chocolate milk every day so something that makes some noise or commotion is a great choice. Chatterbaits, topwater lures or spinner baits are great for searching open bodies of water. If you’re in tight creeks and have some visibility, I love throwing a small 1/16oz weedless hook with a 4” Zman soft-plastic. You can never go wrong with the new penny color or white or pearl.

For my fly guys and gals, fly choice has been all over the map honestly. We’ve had great luck with crab patterns since the fiddlers are showing up. But don’t rule out those baitfish or shrimp patterns. Watch your fish and see how they’re behaving. Are the floating hight and happy or rooting down in the mud? Pick something that the weight and action will suit the situation the best.

We’ve also been seeing some great flat fish out there, lots and lots of smaller guys which should be real fun for next year. Redfish schools are breaking up and spreading out but we’re still finding some great groups here and there. Targeting groups of fish will slowly shift as water temps continue to rise and we begin the great hunt for the all so elusive tailing redfish on the flood tides. Tailers have already been spotted and caught, so fingers crossed for an excellent tailing season.

Off the beach the Spanish and Kings have started showing up in great numbers making for some easy pickings. Some stud Mahi have been caught pretty far out so they’ll be making their way a little closer as things warm up. A lot of folks have their eyes on the prize right now, that being Cobia. Hopefully we get another run of amazing weather which will put the new Pair Marine right to use looking for that sweet meat off the beach.

If anyone is looking to get out on the water, all the contact info in on the website, facebook, instagram, you name it. Give me a call, email or slide right into my DM’s and I’m happy to set something up!
